Self-help Resources 

Books:

The “overcoming” collection of self-help books are very useful when looking to understand some mental health problems from a cognitive behavioural perspective. Within this range there is the following:

 

  • “Overcoming Depression” by P. Gilbert

  • “Overcoming Worry and Generalised Anxiety Disorders by K. Mears and M. Freeston

  • “Overcoming Low self-esteem” by M. Fennell

  • “Overcoming Health Anxiety” by R.Wilson and D.Veale

 

For issues related to trauma the following book might be useful:

 

  • “The Compassionate Mind by P.Gilbert

  • “The Body Keeps The Score” by B. Van Der Kolk

 

Useful apps for Mental health:

  • CALM – helps to build up techniques in Mindfulness which can be helpful to manage worry, anxiety and general emotion regulation.

  • How We Feel (free app) – Helps encourage you to identify and understand your emotions. What triggers unwanted emotions for you and how best to manage these.

  • NHS Every Mind Matters – Free advice and coping tips from NHS clinicians
